Cookies as Art

Beth Bundy

In college, when I returned home for winter break, I would use cookie baking as an excuse to see my hometown friends. We would spend hours with flour and decorations flying around the kitchen into the late night hours. I remember the repeat of “I like a sleigh ride” from Jingle Bells reverberating in my head as we focused on our creations.

Baking is my therapy. The combination of sweetness, artistry and sharing brings joy to myself, family and friends. After spending the time away from my kitchen this past holiday season, the first thing I wanted to do to start the new year was to bake. Fortunately, it was my “Lucky Day” at the public library and I found Martha Stewart’s book Cookie Perfection. I started experimenting with Brown Butter Crinkle Cookies and worked my way through macarons, chunky chocolate chip and even used my love of layers to create jam-filled cookies with cut outs.

As I baked, I also realized that I can also introduce my love of photography into my baking. Thinking about plating, lighting and background has become another creative exploration as I photograph my edible art. The only trick is to capture the prettiest ones before they are eaten!
